Dear Members of the Newman Connection:

We are so honored to be asked to pray for the youth attending Universities.  Each Wednesday we have a holy hour in honor of our patron, St. Joseph, and we will include the youth in our prayers at that time.  Blessed Mother Theresa has said that we are not called to be successful but faithful. We will pray that the youth continue to be faithful to God in the midst of their busy and active lives.

The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph the Worker was founded by Bishop Richard H. Ackerman and Mother Ellen Curran on June 1, 1973, in the Diocese of Covington, Kentucky and was approved by Rome on May 1, 1974.

As a new congregation in the Church, the Sisters chose the title “Sisters of St. Joseph the Worker” because the Church had instituted the feast of St. Joseph the Worker just a few years before in 1955.  Our patronal feast is celebrated on May 1st. The sisters follow the rule of St. Vincent de Paul, the founder of the Daughters of Charity in France.

We have as our special purpose the worship of God, with a special devotion to the Holy Eucharist, and the sanctification of each member through total consecration to God by means of the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience.  We daily strive to live in the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul with simplicity, self-sacrifice, charity, and loyalty to the Magisterium of the Church.

A vocation is a call from God – a call to love and to become holy.  The heart of a religious vocation is falling in love with the Person of Jesus Christ.  Being deeply in love with Him, we are moved to share His love with others; therefore, from our life of prayer, we reach out to all people to lead them to eternal salvation. Our apostolic work is putting God’s love into action by ministering to God’s people in the teaching and health care fields.

Yours in Christ,

Mother Mary Christina, SJW
