A Date With God.......

It’s that time of year again… the leaves are changing, the temperatures are dropping, and your schedule is getting more hectic. Where did all the time that you had in summer go?

First, take a look at your schedule. Some of you may even have planners. Now, take a closer look. Where does your time with God fit in?

I know, I know, you have this meeting, the football game Saturday, and of course classes that require us to study. I mean, that is the primary reason we’re in college- to learn. However, your learning does not stop in biology or even music appreciation. Your learning extends to life- including your relationship with God.

How do you fit God into your life? I’ve always been a firm believer that if you want to make time for something, you will. This may mean giving up watching random Youtube videos or even waking up earlier, but if you really want to make the time for God, you will.

A friend of mine gave me a piece of advice. She told me to find a regular time for God and stick to it. Let that be your meeting with God every day. Don’t break your meeting ever. If you had a meeting with the chancellor of your school, you would not miss it, right? God is much more important than your chancellor. Don’t break your appointment with him- even if you do not feel like it. By continuing with your “date” with God, you are putting his will before yours, and as we know, that is very pleasing to him. Also, don’t be distracted during your time. Don’t text your friends, play on Facebook, or Tweet. Whatever is happening is not going to be more important than God.

Once you get to the point of speaking with God every day, you may decide that you want to learn more about being like him. I would suggest getting involved with your Newman Center. In our Newman Center at Troy University, we offer Mass on campus, Rosary, P.R.A.I.S.E., Bible Study, and Adoration- plus the occasional trip or party, and Catechesis Classes.  Decide to commit to at least one of these a week. Remember, you don’t have to attend every event, unless you want to. After all, you don’t want to get burned out on God. Be consistent, though. If you say you’ll do something, do it.

God is calling you; you just may not hear him through your iPod. He wants to get to know you and for you to know Him. He will never give up on you- even if you put Him on the back burner. Make a special time for Him. Be there to honor Him, ask for blessings, and of course, listen to Him. He may surprise you about what He has to say. Perhaps He is telling you to grow deeper in your faith. Your Newman Center is there to help you with that.

Blessed John Henry Newman, pray for us!
