Dear Class of 2015:
We are truly excited that you will be in Columbia this fall! On behalf of the St. Thomas More Newman Center, we would like to welcome you to the Catholic Church on the University of Missouri campus. Whether you attend Mizzou, Columbia College, or Stephens College, Newman can be your faith home while in college. The Newman Center is a place to study, relax, pray, and meet other Catholic students such as yourself. Join us for worship (the mass schedule is on this page) and simply view our website to see the many programs and activities we provide.
Looking for friends? Check out the small groups, Ephesians 3 Weekly Fellowship, monthly social events, and intramurals teams. Your first week on campus will also be a great time to come by one of Newman’s welcome events to meet people. The Freshman Overnight Retreat and Awakenings Retreat are two other ways to become part of the community!
Want some place quiet to pray? Daily mass at noon every week day is a great addition to your schedule. Adoration and Holy Hours are also available, as is the Eucharistic Reservation Chapel, which is open all day.
Want to serve? The Newman Volunteer Corps provides weekly and monthly service opportunities around Columbia. Campus Ministry will also be taking an international trip to our sister parish in El Salvador over Spring Break!
What about leadership? In addition to many volunteer roles within the Catholic Student Association, the parish also turns to students for religious education teachers, core members for the youth group, and ministries during mass, including music, lectors, and eucharistic ministers.
What about Sunday Mass? We have many mass times throughout the weekend, but our 8 p.m. Sunday night Mass is geared specifically to students. On average, 500 college students attend each week and all of the Mass ministers are students (lectors, musicians, Eucharistic ministers, greeters, etc.).
There is so much going on here and, for that reason, we know you can find a niche. It’s our belief and experience that the friends you make in your college faith community are those that you are most likely to keep in touch with for the rest of your life. Also know that the staff and student leaders are always here to help. Best wishes and prayers for a wonderful college experience! We look forward to meeting you this fall!
