As Director and Head Chaplain of St. John’s Catholic Newman Center at the University of Illinois, WELCOME to your Catholic Church on campus! Our founder, Fr. John O’Brien, recognized 83 years ago that college students – Catholic and otherwise – were hungry for authentic spiritual instruction and moral guidance. As his ministry began, he desired to give students a physical as well as spiritual home on campus. Now, as then, college students are looking for a “home” – for meaning and purpose, for direction. They need something firm to hold onto amid the storms of campus life as they juggle relationships and responsibilities and wrestle with serious temptations.
The ministry of St. John Catholic Newman Center at the University of Illinois reaches out to almost 600 students on site at Newman Hall and the remaining almost 11,000 Catholics on the broader campus. Our mission is to radiate Jesus Christ in all things by encouraging those who live, worship, and work within this community to serve others and to strive toward the highest ideals of Christian spiritual, moral, and intellectual development as lived and taught in the rich tradition of the Catholic Church.
I encourage you TO GET INVOLVED! The opportunities are endless!
A healthy person is one who nourishes the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of their being. Often, unfortunately, people neglect the spiritual dimension of who they are. As you grow as a student here at the University of Illinois, take the time necessary to allow your spirit to grow. The opportunities are here, the next step must be yours. Visit our web site at www.sjcnc.org and GET INVOLVED!
God Bless You,
Monsignor Gregory K. Ketcham
